How the formula generator works
Choose Google Sheets or Excel, then describe the result you want, the columns involved and any conditions.
OpenAI's GPT-4o mini writes one formula and explains it in a few short points.
Copy it into your sheet, check the ranges, and test it on a copy of your data.
Tip: name the exact columns and rows, such as “amounts in D2:D500”, and say what should happen when nothing matches, such as “show 0” or “leave blank”.
Formulas calculate. =GPT() reads and writes.
A formula can’t tell you whether a review is positive or pull a company name out of an email. With GPT for Sheets you can: =GPT("Classify this review as positive, neutral or negative: "&A2), =GPT_EXTRACT(A2, "email") or =GPT_TRANSLATE(A2, "Spanish"), then drag down to run it on every row.
FAQ
Is the formula generator free?
Yes. You can run it twice every 20 minutes in the same browser, with no sign-up; entering your email unlocks five more runs. The example formulas on this page are free to view and do not use a run.
Does it work for Excel too?
Yes. Switch the app to Excel before you generate. Newer functions such as XLOOKUP and UNIQUE need Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365, and TEXTJOIN needs Excel 2019 or later.
Why does the formula show an error in my sheet?
Check that the ranges match your columns and rows. Some spreadsheet locales use semicolons (;) instead of commas between arguments, so replace them if your sheet expects semicolons. Always test a new formula on a copy of your data first.
Can it explain a formula I already have?
Yes. Choose Explain, paste the formula, and you get a one-sentence summary plus a step-by-step breakdown of each part.
Which AI model writes the formulas?
OpenAI's GPT-4o mini, called through the DocGPT.ai API. DocGPT.ai is not affiliated with OpenAI, Google, or Microsoft.
Can AI do things a formula can't?
Yes. Formulas calculate, but they cannot read or write text. In GPT for Sheets, =GPT() classifies, summarizes, extracts, and translates the text in every row, for example =GPT("Classify this review as positive, neutral or negative: "&A2).
