Competitor Monitoring Template
Track competitors in Google Sheets with AI: latest launches via =PERPLEXITY(), Google coverage via =SERP(), changelog summaries with =GPT_SUMMARIZE().
A living competitor tracker in a spreadsheet: one row per competitor, one column per question, and AI answers refreshed on your schedule instead of a stale battlecard from last quarter.
Layout
| Column | Content | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| A | Competitor domain | β |
| B | Positioning | =PERPLEXITY("How does this company position itself? One sentence:", A2) |
| C | Latest launch | =PERPLEXITY("Most recent product launch or major feature announcement by "&A2&". One line with month and year.") |
| D | Pricing move | =PERPLEXITY("Any recent pricing changes at "&A2&"? One line, or 'none found'.") |
| E | Google coverage | =SERP(A2&" announcement", 5) |
Changelog and page summaries
Paste a competitorβs changelog, release notes or pricing page text into a cell, then condense it:
=GPT_SUMMARIZE(F2, "3 bullets: what shipped, who it targets, what it means for us")
For a comparative read across the whole tracker:
=GPT("Based on these competitor updates, what pattern stands out? 3 bullets.", TEXTJOIN(" ||| ", TRUE, C2:C20))
Variations
- Dated snapshots β duplicate the answer columns each sweep (βJanβ, βFebβ, β¦) and use Replace all GPT formulas with results so old snapshots stop refreshing. Diffs between columns are your change log.
- Feature matrix β one column per capability:
=PERPLEXITY("Does "&$A2&" offer "&B$1&"? Answer yes, no, or unclear.")and drag both directions. - Discover who else is out there β seed the list itself with the guide on getting competitor lists from web search.
Get started
- Install GPT for Sheets from the Google Workspace Marketplace (free tier included, no API keys needed).
- List competitor domains in column A and paste the formulas.
- Drag the formulas down, then use Replace all GPT formulas with results to freeze each snapshot.
Function references: =PERPLEXITY() and =SERP().
FAQ
Does this monitor competitors automatically?
It refreshes when you re-run it β the workflow is a weekly or monthly sweep, not a real-time alert feed. Keep dated snapshot columns side by side and the sheet becomes a change log over time.
Where does the competitor information come from?
=PERPLEXITY() answers from live web knowledge, =SERP() returns actual Google results for a query, and =GPT_SUMMARIZE() condenses changelog or pricing-page text you paste into the sheet. All public sources.
How many competitors can I track?
As many rows as you like β GPT for Sheets processes up to 10,000 results per hour. Most teams track 5-30 competitors across a handful of question columns.
