Mail Merge with CC and BCC (Gmail + Google Sheets)
Add per-recipient CC and BCC to a Gmail mail merge from Google Sheets: loop in managers, assistants, or record-keeping addresses on personalized campaigns without exposing your whole list.
Mail Merge with CC and BCC (Gmail + Google Sheets)
Need to copy a manager, assistant, or shared inbox on a personalized campaign? Mail Merge for Gmail and Google Sheets lets each recipient row carry its own CC and BCC so you can loop in the right people per message — without ever exposing your full list to everyone.

CC vs BCC in a mail merge: which to use
- CC (carbon copy) is visible to the recipient. Use it when the recipient should know who else is included — for example, copying an account owner on a client message.
- BCC (blind carbon copy) is hidden. Use it for record-keeping addresses, a CRM drop address, or a compliance archive that the recipient does not need to see.
- Never put your whole list in CC. That exposes every email address to every recipient. A mail merge sends individual messages instead, which is exactly why it is safer than one big group email.
A per-row CC/BCC workflow
- Add CC and BCC columns to your sheet. For example
ccandbcc, filled only on the rows that need them. - Use one address per field, or a separated list if you need to copy more than one person, following the tool’s expected format.
- Keep personalization intact. Your subject and body still merge from the same row, so the copied people see the same context.
- Preview rows with and without CC/BCC. Confirm empty fields are handled and no stray address sneaks onto the wrong message.
- Send a test to yourself first with a test CC and BCC to confirm the copies arrive as expected.
- Send and track. Watch replies, including any that come from the CC’d people.
When per-recipient CC/BCC helps
| Scenario | Use |
|---|---|
| Client message, copy the account owner | CC the owner so the client sees who is involved |
| Sales follow-up, keep a CRM record | BCC the CRM drop address |
| Recruiting, copy a hiring manager | CC the manager on relevant candidates only |
| Internal record-keeping | BCC a shared archive inbox |
| Partner update, loop in a teammate | CC the teammate per account |
Example: client update with account owner on CC
Subject: ` — update`
Hi ,
Here is your update for : .
I have copied so they have visibility too. Reply any time with questions.
Best,
(In the sheet, the cc column for this row holds the owner’s address; the bcc column can hold a record-keeping inbox.)
Sending-quality and privacy cautions
CC and BCC change who can see a message, so double-check every row before a bulk send. Do not CC people who should not see each other, keep your full list out of CC, use BCC for record-keeping rather than hiding large groups of real recipients, and confirm test copies arrive correctly. Use permissioned contacts and respect Gmail/Workspace sending limits.

CC and BCC mail merge FAQ
Can I set a different CC or BCC for each recipient?
Yes. Add CC and BCC columns to your Google Sheet and fill them only on the rows that need them, so each personalized message copies the right people.
Will recipients see each other’s addresses?
No. A mail merge sends individual messages, so recipients do not see your whole list. CC is visible only for the specific people you copy on that row; BCC stays hidden.
Can I BCC a CRM or archive address?
Yes. A common pattern is to BCC a record-keeping or CRM drop address so sent campaigns are logged without the recipient seeing it.
Can I copy more than one person?
You can include multiple addresses in a CC or BCC field following the tool’s expected format. Test first to confirm they all receive the copy.
